Is It Really Important To Wear The Right Shoes?
For a lot of us musicians, shoes are an afterthought: we stick with the same pair of sneakers every day. For others functionality is secondary and shoes are more of a fashion statement. Maybe you fall somewhere in between or maybe you've been rocking the same pair of shoes since high school. Whoever you might be, it's important to know that shoes can have a big impact on your physical health. While it's often overlooked, using the correct shoes for specific activities can provide a lot of health benefits that improve your physical health and performance.
What makes a good shoe?
Unfortunately with shoes, there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. Everyone's feet are different and everyone has different needs especially when it comes to performing certain activities. Regardless of what you plan on doing though, there are a few things to look for to get the most out of the shoes you plan on using:
- Snug Fit - not too tight that your toes can't move, but not too loose that the shoe moves around
- Arch Support - correct arch support helps with body alignment and reducing strain on your feet
- Cushioning - adequate cushioning for the activity you're doing to absorb impacts
Again, everyone will have different needs which will vary by the activity they're doing. It's always good to try different shoes until you find one that works best for you.
Why is it important to wear proper shoes?
Believe it or not, wearing the right shoes not only affects your feet, but also affects your entire body. Shoes offer structural support to the feet which then support the knees, hips, and lower back. Using the wrong shoes for a certain activity, wearing shoes that don't fit correctly, or using shoes that are worn out can lead to injury, chronic pain, joint problems, and even problems with posture over time. It really is important to use the right shoe for the right job. Here are some examples of how shoes are designed for certain activities:
- Running shoes: primarily designed for shock absorption, flexibility, and breathability
- Skate shoes: designed for durability with a flat outsole for grip and board control
- Work boots: designed for durability, protection, and comfort
- Orthopedic shoes: specifically designed for individuals with foot conditions
Wearing the correct shoe for the activity you are doing is important for reducing the risk of injury and long-term physical health problems while also ensuring comfort and safety. It's never a bad idea to invest in proper shoes.
When is it time to replace shoes?
Shoes don't last forever and should be replaced regularly, but how do you know when shoes should be replaced? The amount of time a pair of shoes will last will depend on the individual, how often the shoes are worn, and how long the shoes are used. There are a few obvious warning signs that mean it's time to replace your shoes though:
- Uneven wear patterns or damage to the outsole
- Foot pain after walking or standing
- Insole wear causing for diminished arch support
- Loose or overly tight shoes
Worn out or old shoes no longer provide the stability or support your feet need. Continued use of worn or old shoes can lead to physical health hazards and injury over time. It's important to listen to your body and replace your shoes sooner rather than later.
Conclusion
Shoes shouldn't be an afterthought or just for style, wearing the right shoe is important for overall physical health. The right shoe can be the difference between injury or improving your performance and preventing long term health issues. Don't skimp out on your shoe purchases and make sure the shoe is right for you. Be sure to try the shoe on in person or if you're ordering online make sure the store accepts exchanges/returns. Your body will thank you for using the right shoe for the right job.
